Merced County, California (January 31, 2021) – The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances that led to a fatal pedestrian accident Sunday morning in Merced County.

The hit-and-run collision happened on Highway 99, near the Atwater-Merced Expressway, at about 6 a.m.

An individual was reportedly hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the roadway in the southbound lanes.

The unidentified pedestrian died at the scene after being struck by two other vehicles while lying on the highway.

The operators of the involved vehicles stopped and cooperated with the law.

Intoxication was not considered as a factor in the mishap.

An investigation into the accident underway.
