Five People Die after Fresno Big Rig Accident on Interstate 5 near Panoche Road
Fresno, California (January 6, 2021) – Authorities are investigating a Tuesday night fiery traffic accident that killed five people in Fresno.
The deadly two-vehicle accident happened at about 9:15 p.m., on January 5, on Interstate 5 near Panoche Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a pickup truck was headed northbound on Interstate 5 when it crossed over into the southbound lanes where it collided head-on with a big rig.
As a result of the collision, both vehicles caught fire, the officials said.
Five people in the pickup truck were killed in the accident. Three were children, the CHP said.
The driver of the big rig sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Traffic on the southbound lanes of the freeway, south of the Merced/Fresno county line at Panoche Road, was temporarily stopped due to the collision.
Further details regarding the accident were not immediately available.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
